1. 研究目的与意义

Jane Austen is a famous novelist in English literature history. Austen didn#8217;t go to the regular school, but she read a lot of literary works under the guidance of parents. She started to write at about 20 years old, and six novels were published in her life. In her works, she always revealed aspiration and support of feminism. She loved to shape some female characters who were different from other traditional girls, and these heroines liked breaking the routine to look at things. These characters were a developing symbol of feminism. Among all her works, Emma is one of the greatest novels which represents Austen#8217;s feminist thoughts.Emma, the heroine in the book, is a girl who loves thinking by herself and tries to help people find love, so marriage in this book is a main aspect to reveal feminism. At that time, people started realizing and understanding the right of female. Even now, some experts think that feminism is still a worthy question of our society. Emma would be the typical character to discuss a series of these questions and then could give you a great answer.The last but not least, many readers like Austen#8217;s works because of not only the artistic writing style, but also the new attention of female. The new thing always attracts people#8217;s eyes, and Emma is one typical which could satisfy readers and experts#8217; curiosity. This novel is the maturest one among Austen#8217;s works. It describes several heroines arounds love and marriage, then shows the characteristics of feminism. The research of the theme itself could be interesting and meaningful.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

This essay tries to describe the life and the spiritual growth of heroine Emma in Jane Austen#8217;s Emma, then reflects the thought of feminism through the heroines#8217; independence of their love and marriages. The whole essay focuses on the analysis of main characters and the own view of the author, but it has difficulties in describing heroine Emma#8217;s characteristic. Emma has her own thoughts of future life but she also has some character flaws, and it can not be easy to connect these to feminism.This essay consists of five parts. Chapter one is about the main introduction of the writer Austen, and about the synopsis of the novel Emma .Chapter two concentrates on the whole living background which could be divided into two parts----the historical background and the social background. Chapter three mainly analyzes the feminist characters. On the one hand, chapter three analyzes the characteristics and marriage of Jane Fairfax. It can reveal some feminism from Fairfax#8217;s behaviors and thoughts. On the other hand, This part analyzes the heroine Emma arounds her independent thinking and aspiration growth. In addition, the analysis of heroine can interpret the feminist features more comprehensive and in-depth. Chapter four keeps an eye on Austen#8217;s own view of feminism in Emma. This part briefly represents the writer#8217;s ideological nature and morality. In the first place, it analyzes the anti-traditional thoughts in the novel or even upon the writer herself. Besides, the construction of ethics is another aspect of revealing feminism. Chapter five sums up the whole analysis, and hopes more people understand and appreciate the implied feminism in Emma.

In the past, the scholars rarely studied the anatomy of marriage and feminism in Emma, but the academic study of Jane Austen has not decreased, especially for her love and marriage. Meanwhile, the scholars prefer to focus on Austen#8217;s another one great work Pride and Prejudice. After more than two centuries, Emma, as a mature work of Austen, gradually gets the academic recognition and affirmation. Besides, the value of its literary also reflects more comprehensive. Emma may not be the most popular one, but it has the most mature style and complete structure among Austen#8217;s six novels. In this novel, whether the writer#8217;s understanding of reality and thinking of life, or the skills in the novel, are all more profound, skilled and proper than the early works. The novel Emma embodies Austen#8217;s ability of language, the ability of shaping characters and the exploration of literary technique. More and more scholars find that compared with other works of Austen, Emma can explained Austen#8217;s own view of marriage and feminism more fully. In recent years, Chinese scholars start to study more about Emma. Wang Hongli writed a paper The Precious Personality Defects-Analysis of Emma#8217;s image in 2007, in which the writer analyzed Emma#8217;s characteristics and received another connotation-Emma#8217;s defective features. Meanwhile, it interpret the feminist consciousness upon Austen. Hu Changzhi#8217; s paper The Love in Emma: rational and men#8217;s redemption analyzed Emma to reflect the marriage, feminism and class compromise in Austen#8217;s works. Then, it can be good to represent the feminist consciousness. Of course, there are many other papers and essays which analyze this theme, and these works could help people understand the deep connotation of Emma.The important reason why Austen#8217;s works could be popular is these works contain the topics which is connected closely with female real life. Love and marriage, the relationship of sex, self-growth and so on are all still existed. In addition, these vital topics of female can be useful to analyze feminism. Nowadays, Emma has become the treasure of literature, and has received comprehensive recognition. It represents the metal literary value and social meaning of this work. Regardless of the change of time, it can not diminish Emma#8217;s contribution to the realism creation. According to the progress of feminist consciousness in Emma, the scholars would continue to research and discuss the similar works.
